Neuropathy and Acupuncture

Acupuncture and neuropathy

It’s hard to imagine not being able to control your arms or feet due to the pain in your extremities but a lot of people with neuropathy experience this every day. Fortunately thanks to the advances in medicine treatments are being developed to manage this disease. But who would have thought that an ancient alternative medicine can be just as effective as the newly developed drugs and ointments? Acupuncture is a natural and effective way to deal with neuropathy.

Neuropathy is a disease where the nerves are damaged. The damaged nerves give out incorrect signals which then cause pain, tingling or numbness to your body or extremities. When the pain or numbness is at an advanced stage this may also cause loss of balance and even the disruption of motor skills. Feet are usually affected first then the legs although in other cases it starts with the hands then up the arms.

Acupuncture is an old form of Chinese medicine and it can help to alleviate pain, relax muscles and even improve mood. This is accomplished by inserting thin needles into various acupuncture points. Most of these points are along the “meridians” of the body through which Qi flows. These meridians correspond to different organs in the body which have energetic and physical properties. If the Qi levels are deficient, in excess or stagnant they lead to symptoms of diseases. Acupuncture eases the pain by fixing the imbalance of Qi in the body. The needles are left in the body for around 15 to 30 minutes and the practitioner may manipulate the needles to adjust the flow of Qi.

When used to treat neuropathy acupuncture is applied to both the front and back of the body. When the patient is lying face up needles are placed in the arms, legs and other parts in pain. When the patient is face down needles are applied in the lumbar region where the spinal nerves exit the spinal column. Acupuncture doesn’t instantly remove the pain you’re feeling but with several sessions of therapy it may be very effective.

While acupuncture has been proven to be effective there are many different factors that may come into play such as your age, general health, severity of the disease and skill of the acupuncturist. If want to try acupuncture for neuropathy make sure you’re prepared, well informed and you have the right doctor for you.
